Bunker Hill Ladies Fair is held.

September 8, 1840

Organized by Sarah Josepha Hale, the week-long fair is held in Faneuil Hall. The fair, which includes kisses sold by Mrs. Harrison Gray Otis, raises $30,000 to help pay for construction of the stalled Bunker Hill Monument. Amos Lawrence and Judah each subsequently contribute $10,000 to the cause, enabling construction to proceed.
