British troops occupy Boston.
October 1, 1768
Fourteen ships carrying two regiments of British troops land at Long Wharf. In what is later described as an attempt to overawe the inhabitants of the town, some 1,200 troops come ashore with drums beating and fifes playing. Mercy Otis Warren later writes, “The American war may be dated from the hostile parade.” Some of the troops are garrisoned first at Faneuil Hall and the Town House. After an attempt to move others into the Manufactory House fails, they are moved to various warehouses.
