Brighton High School (first) opens.

[1844] It is located in a former private school (est. 1839) on Academy Hill Road. John Ruggles is the first master and serves until 1859. A new building (second) opens on an adjacent site in 1856.* The original building is moved to the corner of Winship and Washington Streets. The school moves to a new building (third) on Warren Street in 1895,* then to its current building (fourth) on Warren Street in 1931.
