Brewer Fountain is dedicated.
June 3, 1868
Artist: Michel Liénard. It is located on Boston Common along Tremont Street near Park Street. Donated to the city by Gardner Brewer, it is the only known surviving copy of the original fountain by Mathurin Moreau and Alexandre Lambert, which was created for the Paris Exposition of 1855. Although sometimes attributed to Paul Liénard, who was born in 1849, it is more likely the work of Michel Liénard, who was born in 1810. The fountain includes bronze statues of the Greek sea god Poseidon, his consort Amphitrite, the sea nymph Galatea, and her lover Acis. Originally installed on the Beacon Street side of the Common, it is moved to the corner near Tremont Street and Park Street in 1917. The fountain restored and rededicated on May 26, 2010.
