Braves Field opens.
August 18, 1915
The Boston Braves beat St. Louis 3-1 before more than 46,000 fans at the new ballpark that is located on the former site of the Allston Golf Club at 20 Gaffney Street. The largest baseball stadium is the U.S. at the time, it becomes known for the “jury box” bleachers in right field (so named by a sportswriter who counts only 12 people sitting there at a game). Railroad tracks and Charles River run behind beyond the fence in left field. The park is altered over the years. After the Braves leave Boston for Milwaukee, the stadium is sold to Boston University on July 30, 1952, and subsequently converted to Boston University Nickerson Field.
