Bostonian Lorenzo Baker imports the first bananas to the U.S.

Returning from South America, the local ship captain Baker imports 160 bunches of bananas from Jamaica and sells them in Jersey City. He imports the first bananas to Boston in 1871, and organizes a wholesale company to sell them in 1885.*
