Boston is the 20th most populous city in the U.S. Of its total population, 290,312 (47.0%) are white and 327,282 non-white, including 150,437 (24.4%) are African-American; 107,917 (17.5%) Hispanic; 55,500 (8.9%) Asian/Pacific Islander; 1,3,328 (2.1%) other minorities, either a single race or multi-racial. Boston’s population increased by 28,453 (4.8%) since 2000, exceeding the growth rate of the metropolitan area (3.1%) and, for the first time in 130 years, that of the state (3.1%). 53% of the population is classified as non-white, the second decade in a row that Boston is classified as a majority-minority city. 216,213 (35%) are between 20 and 34 years-old, the highest percentage of any major city in the U.S. An estimated 27% are foreign born, including 18,189 from the Dominican Republic, 16,785 from China, 13,782 from Haiti, 7,684 from Vietnam, 7,575 from El Salvador, 6,703 from Columbia, 6,457 from Cape Verde, 5,637 from Jamaica, 4,823 from Brazil, and 4,203 from India.
