Boston Police Gaelic Columns of Pipes and Drums is established.
1992
A volunteer group, it is founded after a police bagpipe band from New York City had to be brought in for the funeral of a Boston police officer. One is one of the first police bagpipe bands in New England, it got off to a rocky start. According to founding member and drum major Ptl. James Barry, “In the very beginning, we were horrible. We sounded like two cats fighting in an alley and maybe that sounded better than we did.” Since then, however, it has become the first U.S. band to win “Best Bagpipe Band” and “Best Entry” in St. Patrick’s Day parades in Ireland.
