Boston Police are required to wear uniforms.

January 31, 1858

(Jan.) Officers’ uniforms consist of a double-breasted indigo blue frock coat, tall hat, and, in summer, a silk vest. Patrolmen’s uniforms are less elaborate and include black billed caps. White cotton gloves are issued as part of the uniform in 1861. Although intended to help citizens recognize police, the uniforms are criticized by some for making officers look like “popinjays” and for exposing them to criminals.
