Boston Lyceum first meets.

The meeting is held at Chauncey Hall. The first organization of its kind to admit women, its purpose is to promote “improvement in useful knowledge.” Classes are offered beginning on August 13, 1829. The lyceum movement is promoted by George Emerson, Horace Mann, and Amasa Walker .
