Boston Light is destroyed by British warships.

During the attack, Mary Burton, a Loyalist aboard one of the British ships, is killed. Her husband, William, is allowed to bury her at Long Island. According to legend, her ghost later appears on the island, dressed in a red cloak, and comes to be called “The Woman in Scarlet.”
