Boston Landmarks Commission is established.

(Dec.) Created by the Massachusetts legislature, its purpose is to identify, protect, and preserve historic properties in the city. The first nine-member board is sworn in on July 14, 1976. Pauline Chase Harrell is the first chairperson. The commission works with various neighborhood historical commissions. It creates the position of Boston City archaeologist in 1983.
