Boston Housing Authority ends construction of large public housing development for families.
1954
According to Lawrence Vale, the halt occurs because city officials were “starting to feel resistance from the neighborhoods.” By this time, the city has 25 developments housing some 14,000 families. Of the 8,000 units of public housing built in Boston between 1949 and 1954, approximately half were built under the federal public housing program and half under the state’s veterans’ housing program. Other U.S. cities continue to build family public housing developments for years afterward.
