Boston Harbor Islands National Park Area is established.

November 12, 1996

Created by Congress, it is made up of most of the 34 harbor islands and peninsulas, including 16 islands that were already part of the Boston Harbor State Park established in 1975. The park is said to doubles in size every day – from 1,483 acres at high tide to 3,067 acres at low tide.
