Boston Globe leads a nation-wide call for a free press.

More than 400 newspapers across the U.S. respond to to the Globe’s invitation to run editorials that defend a free press and protest President Donald Trump’s continued assault on what he calls “the fake media.” In addition to publishing selections of those editorials, the Globe, in its own, quotes John Adams declaring, “The liberty of the press is essential to the security of Freedom,” and concludes, “The greatness of America is dependent on the role of a free press to speak the truth to the powerful. To label the press, ‘the enemy of the people’ [as President Trump has repeatedly done] is as un-American as it is dangerous to the civic compact we have shared for more than two centuries.”
