Boston Gangland Murders begin.

October 31, 1961

The first of the four-year wave of violence occurs when Bernie McLaughlin, the reputed head of a Charlestown gang, is shot and killed outside Richards Liquor Store in City Square. McLaughin is allegedly killed by Buddy McLean, reputed head of a rival gang based in Somerville, who had discovered a bomb under his car the day before. Two of the more notable murders occur in 1965,* and according to some sources they total more than 60 victims by 1976.
