Boston Day Police force is established.

July 21, 1838

Authorized by the Massachusetts legislation on May 15, 1838, the first daytime police force in Boston consists of six officers under the command of a city marshal. The officers are issued green leather badges to be worn on the front of their hats. Although the city is now be patrolled around the clock, there is no coordination between the Day Police and the Night Watch. By 1846, the daytime force is made up of 22 officers.
