Boston Common Underground Garage opens.

The facility, first proposed in 1946, is located underneath Boston Common. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on March 3, 1960. Robert Lowell later writes, “Yellow dinosaur steam shovels gouge their underworld garage” Plagued by construction delays and charges of corruption scandals and delays, the garage is declared structurally unsafe and closed for repairs in March 1993. It reopens in July 1995.
