Boston City Council apologizes for city’s role in slave trade.
June 15, 2022
The resolution, sponsored by Councilor Tania Fernandes, “denounces the historical practices of slavery aided and abetted by the city government of Boston” and calls on the city to “vow to dedicate policies and efforts to repair past and present harm done to Black Americans via systemic racism and in various realms of city life, including housing, healthcare, education, and the workplace.” Boston is reputed to be the first major city in the U.S. to issue such an apology.
