Boston Celtics win the NBA championship in Los Angeles.
May 5, 1969
The Celtics beat the Lakers 108-106 in game 7 in the Los Angeles Forum to win the team’s 11th NBA title in the last 13 years. The team wins on a shot by Don Nelson that bounces high off the rim and then down through the basket. The outcome forces Lakers’ owner Jack Kent Cooke to leave thousands of “victory balloons” hanging in nets in the rafters of the arena. After the game, Bill Russell announces his retirement as player and coach of the team.
