Boston Braves Hugh Duffy ends the year with a batting average of .440.
September 30, 1894
(Sept.) A member of what was then then Beaneaters, Duffy’s average remains the highest in Major League Baseball history, until records from the Negro Leagues are added in 2024, which drops it to third highest behind Josh Gibson’s .466 average for the Pennsylvania Homestead Grays in 1943 and Charlie “Chino” Smith’s .451 for the New York Lincoln Giants in 1929.
