Boston Board of Health is established.

The first municipal board of health in the U.S., it is formed after an outbreak of yellow fever. It purpose is “to examine into all Nuisances & other causes injurious to the Health of the Inhabitants . . . and order such Nuisances to be removed.” Although Paul Revere is the board’s first president, he is later prosecuted for violating its regulations. The board is abolished and its responsibilities assumed by the new mayor and Board of Aldermen in 1822. The board is reestablished in 1873,* and reorganized in 1965* and 1995.*
