Boston Arts Festival (ninth) is held
June 3, 1960
(to 6/19) Robert Lowell is guest of honor at annual event at the Boston Public Garden. After remarking, “[Boston is] rapidly emerging as a center of highways and parking places,” he first reads the poem “For the Union Dead,” which written for the festival. A crowd of 4,000 people, including Eleanor Roosevelt, attends the festival on June 5, 1960.
