Boston & Albany Railroad Station (first) opens.
September 4, 1881
The station is located on Kneeland Street. Its construction prompts development of a nearby of streets named for towns in upstate New York (Albany, Genesee, Oneida, Oswego, Rochester, Seneca, Troy). The first streets in Boston named for neither local or foreign locations, they lead the area to be called the New York Streets. It is replaced by a new building (second) in 1899.* The building is torn down to make way for the Massachusetts Turnpike Extension in the early 1960s.
