Bolt Beranek & Newman is established in Cambridge.

Founded by Richard Bolt, Leo Beranek, and Robert Newman in Cambridge, it is originally an acoustic research business. The company subsequently becomes a major research and development contractor for the U.S. military and other government agencies. The company later changes its name to BBN Technologies. It is acquired by GTE in the 1990s (which becomes Verizon in 2000), becomes an independent company again in 2004 and is purchased by Raytheon Company in 2009.
