Blue Bikes begin operation in Boston.
July 28, 2011
Originally Hubway, the bicycle rental service offers 600 bicycles at 61 stations across Boston to either short-term or long-term members. By the end of its first year, the program claims to have surpassed 350,000 trips, despite the fact that Bicycling Magazine calls Boston “one of the worst cities for cycling” in the U.S. The program expands to include neighboring communities and then dramatically expands after entering a partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts in 2018.
