Big Beat Rock ‘n’ Roll Concert ends in a riot.
May 3, 1958
Some 6,000 fans riot at the concert, which is held at the Boston Arena. The concert is hosted by New York disc jockey Alan Freed and performers include Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly & the Crickets, and Jerry Lee Lewis. Freed is subsequently charged with inciting to riot, but the charges are eventually dropped. Mayor John Hynes subsequently orders a temporary ban on rock ‘n’ roll concerts in the city.
