Berklee College of Music is established.
1945
Originally Schillinger House, it is founded by Larry Berk and located at 284 Newbury Street. Larry Berk is the first president. The school initially teaches the mathematical system of musical theory developed by Joseph Schillinger, but shifts to a more traditional curriculum and is renamed in 1954. It moves to the former Hotel Bostonian at 1140 Boylston Street and is accredited to grant bachelor’s degrees in 1966 [1973-Bahne], and becomes Berklee College of Music in 1970. Graduates include Gary Burton, Paula Cole, Melissa Etheridge, Keith Jarrett, Quincy Jones, Patty Larkin, Aimee Mann, Branford Marsalis, and Esperanza Spalding. The school expands to the former Sherry Biltmore Hotel at 150 Massachusetts Avenue, and then to the former Fenway Theatre in 1972 [1973-Vacca]. It merges with the Boston Conservatory and becomes Berklee in 2016.
