Benjamin Rutstein dies in France.
July 15, 1918
Born in the West End to Harris and Esther Rutstein, Jewish immigrants from Russia, Benjamin Rustein lived at 23 Lowell Street. He joined the U.S. Army in 1917 and served in France with the 167th Infantry Regiment of the Alabama National Guard (attached to the 42nd Division out of New York) in 1918. The Army reports simply states that he died from injuries and lies in rest at the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery, Romagne, France. The City of Boston approves a Hero Square for Rutstein at the corner of Spring Street and Chambers Streets. After the West End urban renewal project, it is re-erected at the corner of Staniford Street and William Cardinal O’Connell Way.
