Bell-in-Hand Tavern moves to Pi Alley.

1853

Described as ignominious but convenient by Lucius Beebe, its new location is at 227 Washington Street. Beebe later writes, “If a patron fell down among the cuspidors he was likely to go undiscovered for days, and, as the chances were that he was a reporter from one of the adjacent offices of Newspaper Row, his acquaintances would pool their intellectual resources in the front room and send to his office reasonably convincing dispatches fabricated over his byline.” The tavern later moves to Devonshire Street, then to its current location at 45 Union Street in Dock Square.
