Belfry Murders begin.

Bridget Landergan is the first of a series of young women and girls killed. After six(five)-year-old Mabel Young is murdered in the Warren Avenue Baptist Church on May 23, 1875, the church Sexton Thomas Piper is arrested. He subsequently confesses to Young’s murder, but not to the others. Piper is hanged on May 26, 1876.
