Beehive Riots begin.
July 22, 1825
A mob begins a week-long series of raids on brothels on Ann Street (today’s North Street), destroying property and prompting the so-called “nymphs of Ann Street” to flee. Mayor Josiah Quincy subsequently hires 40 “truckmen” to stop the violence. Ann Street is renamed North Street and extended to Commercial Street in 1854.
