Barnes Bill is adopted.

1948

Passed by the Massachusetts legislature and signed by Gov. Robert Bradford, the law bars persons charged with supporting any Communist doctrine from jobs in public and private educational institutions. Opponents who spoke against the proposed legislation included many of the presidents of Boston area colleges, including Harvard president James Bryant Conant. The law remains in effect until it is ruled invalid by the Supreme Judicial Court in 1967.
