Bank of the United States (first) Boston branch opens.

It is one of three branches (the others are in New York and Baltimore) of the bank, which was created by legislation signed by President Washington on February 25, 19791. Thomas Russell is the first president of the Boston branch. The bank moves to a new building (second) on the site of the Exchange Tavern in 1798.* The bank’s charter expires in 1811. A second United States Bank is established in 1817 and dissolved in 1836.
