Atlantic Avenue is constructed.

Built of made land from the recently demolished Fort Hill, it runs along the route of the former Barricado. Construction began in 1869 and led to the demolition of parts of a number of warehouses. The road was meant to promote commercial activity, but soon after it is built the Port of Boston begins to decline in importance.
