Anti-Snob Zoning Law is adopted by the Massachusetts Legislature.
1969
Officially Chapter 40B, the law allows developers of affordable housing projects to bypass certain municipal zoning restrictions if less than 1.5% of zoned land or 10% of the housing stock in the community in question is not allocated to affordable residential use. The law is upheld by the Supreme Judicial Court in 1978. Since its passage, it is credited with helping to create some 60,000 units of affordable housing – more than 21,000 in Boston. But critics contend that it promotes construction of large stand-alone projects that are not integrated in the community.
