American House (first) is built.

1835

Operated by Lewis Rice, the hotel is located on today’s City Hall Plaza (then 56 Hanover Street). The first hotel in the U.S. with a passenger elevator, it subsequently expands to include a number of adjacent hotels and is enlarged to 200 rooms in 1851. Guests include John Brown. It is replaced by a new building in 1871.*
