Afghanistan War begins.

Responding to the World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001, the U.S. initiates leads a coalition of countries attacks the Taliban regime in Afghanistan for allowing the terrorist group Al Qaeda to operate within that country. The conflict technically ends on December 28, 2014. But a residual force of U.S. and other troops remains in the country until 2021.*
