Adams (Samuel) is born in Boston.

September 27, 1722

The son of Samuel and Mary (Fifield) Adams, Samuel Adams is born on Purchase Street, graduates from Harvard College, where he receives a master’ degree in 1743.* He inherits his father’s brewery in 1748, but soon goes bankrupt, marries Elizabeth Checkley in 1749, and Elizabeth Wells in 1764.* Adams is elected to town meeting in 1765,* serves in the Massachusetts House of Representatives (1765-1774) and Senate (1781-1784, 1786-1787), the Continental Congress (1774-81), as lieutenant governor (1789-94), and governor (1794-1797). Called the “Father of the American Revolution” for his talents as a political organizer, he dies at his home at 5 Winter Street on October 2, 1803,* and is buried in the Granary Burying Grounds.
