Abiel Smith School is boycotted by African-American parents.

Led by William Cooper Nell leads the boycott leads to enrollment at the school decreasing from 263 to 51 [53-Kendrick]. Despite Thomas Paul Jr. being named the first African-American principal of the school, the boycott continues until 1855.*
