9 to 5 is established.

(Fall) Founded by Karen Nussbaum and Ellen Cassedy, it holds its meetings initially at 5 Park Street, then moves to Clarendon Street in 1973.* An outgrowth of an effort to organize clerical workers at Harvard University, its goal is to promote better pay, treatment, and working conditions for women clerical workers in Boston. Subsequently a national organization, it becomes a local chapter of Service Employees International Union in 1975, a national union in 1981, and merges with other local chapters in Boston in 2001. Its headquarters are located today at 145 Tremont Street. A feature film about the organization is released in 1980* and a documentary in 2020.*
