Kidney transplant from a pig to a human is performed.

A team led by Dr. Leonard Riella performs the first successful transplant from a genetically modified pig to a human at Massachusetts General Hospital. The patient, Rick Slayman, 62, of Weymouth, had previously received a transplanted human kidney, but was forced to return to dialysis after it failed last year.
