O’Grady (Lorraine) is born in Roxbury.

The daughter of Jamaican immigrants Edwin and Lena O’Grady, Lorraine O’Grady graduates from Girls Latin School and Wellesley College, moves to Washington D.C. and Chicago, and finally New York City, where she becomes a critic and professor of art and literature, and then, in her 40s, a noted photographer and visual and conceptual artist, known for her creation of the character “Mlle Bourgeoise Noir.” She dies in New York on December 13, 2024.
