Harvard president Claudine Gay appears before a Congressional committee in Washington, D.C.

The recently-named first African-American president of the university, Gay testifies before the committee investigating hate speech in the wake of pro-Palestinian demonstrations on campus. Asked if calling for the genocide of Jews violates Harvard policies, she replies, “It depends on the context,” After subsequently apologizing for her choice of words, Gay resigns after only six months in the position on January 2, 2024.
