Boston City Council assumes increased authority over the city budget.

After approval by voters of a binding referendum question in 2021, the City Council, which previously could only accept or reject the budget proposed by the mayor, can now transfer funds from less than half of the proposed budget by a two-thirds vote as long as it does not increase the amount requested by the mayor.
