Emancipation Group is removed.

December 28, 2020

The Boston Arts Commission unanimously voted for its removal on June 30, 2020, after local artist Tory Bullock gathered a petition signed by 12,000 people objecting to the depiction of the figure of the African-American man in front of President Lincoln. Its removal of the monument is opposed by African-American historian Byron Rushing, who declares, “I’d keep it up with the understanding that African-Americans, who had been freed only a few years before, were able to raise $16,000 [for its construction].”
