Mayor Marty Walsh declares racism a public health crisis in Boston.
June 12, 2020
Responding to almost two weeks of protest over police practices and racial inequality, Walsh declares “We’re not going to let this moment or this movement pass us by. I pledged to make Boston a national leader in this work and we are following through on our pledge.” The mayor announces that 20% of the Boston police Department overtime budget – or $12 million – will be transferred to programs to fight systematic racism and economic and racial inequality.
