An illegal immigrant from Guatemala who had been in the U.S. for only 19 months, de la Cruz is attacked near 144 Falcon Street. Like Wilson Martinez, 15, and Irvin de Paz, 15, he is thought to have been killed by young men attempting to become full-fledged members of the El Salvador-based MS-13 gang. de la Cruz’s mother later tells the Boston Globe that her son wanted to return to Guatemala because life in Boston had become too risky.
