March 31, 2012
(March) Thirteen feet tall and 13,000 pounds, it is the largest classical statue in a museum in the U.S. The statue dates from 1633 when it was in the collection of Cardinal Ludovico Ludovisi in Rome. It was purchased by Charles Franklin Sprague and his wife Mary Pratt State and installed on their Brookline estate in 1904. Damage caused by New England weather to its face prompts the MFA to restore the statue in 2013.
