National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories is built.

2008

Also known as the Boston University “Biolab,” it is located at 606 Albany Street. One of 11 Biosafety Level 4 labs in the country, the facility is designed to engage in research on the most infectious and deadly germs and diseases. Intense neighborhood resistance and legal challenges prevent it from full operation for several years. The laboratory receives approval to handle less hazardous Level 2 diseases in March 2012, but does not receive final approval for more hazardous Level 3 and Level 4 germs by the Boston Public Heaolth Commission until December 6, 2017. The first samples of the Ebola virus arrive in August 2018.
